Here are some pics of the new Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen Soundwave toy courtesy of Empire magazine:
I’m guessing Soundwave’s alt mode is Cybertronian, like Megatron in the first film.
Soundwave used to look like this back in the original 80s cartoon:
At least the new Soundwave’s head is vaguely reminiscent of the original G1 design…
I have no problems whatsoever with updating Soundwave’s, or any other character’s, alt mode for the big screen; a tape recorder, besides being horribly outdated, just wouldn’t work transforming into a giant robot in the more realistic, live-action universe the movie Transformers inhabit.
However, I do have problems with busy, visually unappealing designs that all look the same moving around in front of the camera. The last movie’s action sequences were incredibly hard to follow, and it was next to impossible to tell one Transformer apart from another (save Optimus, who was red and blue with flames, and Bumblebee, who was yellow).
Keep in mind that the pic above is of the Soundwave toy and in all likelihood a much simplified version of the actual design.
Now just imagine the Soundwave pictured above going toe-to-toe with this guy:
Not a pretty sight, is it?
