Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

Check out this uber-cool trailer for Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, a new, as-yet-unreleased, independent third-person shooter by Fuelcell Games (in collaboration with artist and animator Michel Gagne):

Impressive.

First off, the title – Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet – is all sorts of awesome.

Secondly, well, just look at that trailer again: the fluidity of the animation (tentacles!); the stark, shadowy visuals of the titular Shadow Planet (atmospheric!); and the old-school, hardcore, R-Type/Gradius-style gameplay (unforgiving!)…

And although it may only be a temp score for the trailer, I really like the music.

Check out these publicity stills (and some of my favorite bits from the trailer) from the official site, InsanelyTwisted.com:

I was pretty much sold at this point in the trailer, watching the Exploratorium pictured above with its fluidly animated scope and the winged creatures flying in the distance.

In an interview with Michel Gagne and Joseph Olson (part of the team at Fuelcell Games) at CoreGaming (you can read the full interview here), the game’s creators reveal that the cool seamless zooming in and out seen in the trailer figures into the gameplay mechanics.

You may have noticed in the trailer a sequence showing a zoomed-in view of the alien craft being attacked by what appear to be malevolent, drill bit-like machines.  According to Olson, the player must fend off Drill Bots, viral entities, and other equally twisted shadow creatures, mini-game-style.   In the interview, he refers to moments such as these as “nano game[s],” a cool term and very appropriate given the game’s immense scale.

Speaking of “immense scale…”

Apparently, the many-eyed creature above is a “mini” boss…

Collecting pollen (the glowing orbs) factors into the gameplay somehow…

Although not pictured here, I love the part in the trailer when the spacecraft uses its armature to lob a glowing sphere into some sort of reactor-looking thingamajiggy…

Looking forward to this one when it finally does come out…
