Mario World by *Orioto on deviantART
In a word, “Super.”
I love it.
The soft, fuzzy, dream-like quality. The little details – the bird flitting by on the right and the Goomba snoozing in the background (to the left of Mario with a little “Z” hovering overhead). The coins floating in mid-air…
In his comments about the piece, the artist mentions his desire to emulate a “Ghibli-style” background (Studio Ghibli is the Japanese animation film studio that produced My Neighbor Totoro, one of my all-time favorite films, and 2002’s Academy Award-winning Spirited Away), and I really feel the artist succeeded.
Here’s a comparison shot -
(Boy, do I LOVE this Totoro pic)
It’s impressive - the realistic and the fantastic blending together so perfectly. You have fantastic light and shadows, a brightly colored field of flowers stretching as far as the eye can see, craggy rock formations, and berry-laden trees next to perfectly rounded, cartoon hills, shiny, metal pipes, and the characters themselves – Mario, the Piranha Plant, and the Goombas… And it works.
Very cool.
