“Red Band” Alien Vs. Predator Sequel Trailer

Alien Vs. Predator – Requiem (that’s the official title) is the sequel to the first Alien Vs. Predator film which debuted 3 years ago to less-than-stellar reviews (rottentomatoes.com lists the first movie at 21% with 103 negative reviews out of a total of 131).

The first Alien Vs. Predator, or AVP for short, was a pretty big disappointment for most of the longtime, hardcore fans of the original series (myself included), with a silly and flimsy plot chock full of two-dimensional characters whose plight audience members are given little reason to care about, serviceable but ultimately forgettable performances and poorly written, mostly expository dialogue.  With the film’s PG-13 rating (the movie contains none of the gore, violence, or profanity that series’ regulars are accustomed to) and plot points that directly contradict elements established in the preceding films, Alien Vs. Predator succeeded in “alien”-ating a large percentage of the established fan base.

The movie wasn’t scary at all (not that I was expecting it to be), and the actions sequences were blah - nothing truly spectacular - and certainly didn’t live up to the ultra crazy Alien-on-Predator fight scenes fans have been imagining all this time.

The movie raked in a good $80 million despite all the unfavorable reviews and criticism from longtime fans of the two properties.  A sequel was (mostly) inevitable, and this holiday season, (December 25th, to be exact.  Why Christmas?  I have no clue) a brand new Alien Vs. Predator movie opens in theaters across the nation.

Now, given the serious mishandling of what should have been a ridiculously awesome movie, teaming two successful and long-running horror franchises together, I had my doubts about a sequel (I still have them) and was determined to avoid seeing it, but a new trailer has successfully sparked my interest in the project.

For one thing, although the “film has not yet been rated” by the MPAA (this from the official Alien Vs. Predator – Requiem, or AVP-R, website) the trailer is a “red band” trailer, containing tons of graphic footage with all the blood and gore missing from the original.  You can catch it here - just follow the links and after verifying your age, you’re all set.

My friend Chris is really excited about the new movie now, and I’m sure there are tons of fans who have been wooed back by the studio’s decision to release this version of the trailer.  Personally, I think it’s a smart move by the studio and should help to counteract some of the negativity towards the project, at least as far as the hardcore fans are concerned.

I mean, they’re the ones who are actually going to see the movie on opening day.

For myself, I’m content to wait until the actual rating comes in.  If it’s an R, I probably will see it.  I’m guessing this sequel won’t improve on the original storywise or in terms of the quality of acting or dialogue, but as long as AVP-R has plenty of action and lots of cool R-Rated kills, it’ll be worth the price of admission, I’m sure.
