Okami Coming To The Wii!

Well, it’s official, Capcom’s award-winning game, Okami, is coming to the Nintendo Wii in Spring of 2008, courtesy of Ready At Dawn Studios and sporting a re-designed control scheme that takes full advantage of the Wii’s unique controls.

Exciting news!

Originally developed by the now defunct Clover Studios and released on Sony’s PS2, Okami received many industry accolades, including “Game Of The Year” many times over, for its innovative gameplay and stunningly gorgeous visuals.  With its creative art direction and use of cel-shading combined with a “paper parchment” filter, the game resembles a moving, vibrantly painted Japanese watercolor.  Hand-in-hand with the distinctive look of the game, players use a Celestial Brush to “paint” on screen in order to perform certain actions – cutting down obstacles, repairing bridges, even turning night to day.

The story set in ancient Japan, is enthralling, featuring many colorful characters, and delves deeply into Japanese mythology and folklore.  Gamers take on the role of Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, in wolf form, on a quest to restore the land and free its inhabitants from the curse of the evil, 8-headed demon Orochi.

I actually own the game for PS2.  It’s an amazing game, highly recommended, and I for one am extremely pleased at the news that gamers around the world will have another opportunity to experience this remarkable game.  Originally released in 2006, Okami suffered from poor sales despite all the highly favorable reviews and numerous awards.

Aside from the updated control scheme (gamers will now perform the drawing or painting motions using the Wii Remote), the re-release will be an exact port of the PS2 version (there may be slight graphical changes due to the differences in hardware) which may be disappointing news to some, especially those of us lucky enough to already own the game and looking to possibly pick up the re-release with its improved gameplay mechanics.

Hopefully, if the game does well this time on Nintendo Wii, the chances of a followup, either a sequel or spin-off title, will improve.

Personally, I’d still love to see a scaled down version of the game for the Nintendo DS.  Something similar to the upcoming God Of War: Chains Of Olympus for the Playstation Portable.

I, like many others, always felt that the game’s unique painting gameplay mechanic would work extraordinarily well on a system like the Nintendo DS or Wii.  Glad to see the game developers agree.
