Here’s a trailer for Limbo, a visually striking, atmospheric, 2D side-scroller and puzzler from Denmark-based game studio PLAYDEAD:
Here’s a screenshot:
The game is gorgeous, to be sure, but to fully appreciate the amazing visuals, realistic physics, and fluid animation, you really do have to see it in motion.
Rendered entirely in black and white, Limbo reminds me of a dark and sinister, alternate reality A Boy And His Blob for Wii (minus the Blob, of course).
The story’s shadowy, bright-eyed protagonist is a young boy who must traverse a variety of environs including a creepy forest, a mist-enshrouded lake, and, oddly enough, an industrial-style factory in search of his lost sister.
The title’s terrific, and the lack of in-game music really helps to set an ominous, otherworldly mood.
For me, that’s where Limbo really shines: the game’s designers have absolutely nailed the unnerving sensation that the hero’s life is in constant peril. There’s no life meter here; one misstep, and the boy’s a goner.
Near the end of the trailer, the boy is forced to contend with a slowly tilting factory warehouse full of heavy crates, sliding metal objects, and immense, boy-crushing gears as he struggles to make his way from platform to platform, just barely clearing jumps that your average, physics-defying video game plumber/hedgehog would find all too easy.
Last week, the game took home two Independent Games Festival Awards, one for Technical Excellence and another for Excellence in Visual Art.
The game is scheduled to release this summer for Xbox LIVE Arcade. I, for one, can’t wait.
