G. I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra – Cobra Commander Action Figure

In February, I posted pics of a kiddie-fied Cobra Commander from this summer’s upcoming G. I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra - our first look at the villain’s live-action counterpart.  (Click here for the original post.)

Now, pics of the new Cobra Commander movie tie-in action figure have shown up online providing confirmation that what we saw earlier is in fact the real deal:

I can’t say that I’m particularly fond of Cobra Commander’s new look.  What do you think?

yeah i think it really sucks , should of stayed true to the comic version, we should have a vote on this
someone call the hasbro people … hopefully its just decoy version

is a shame that the people that make movies doesn’t take time to read a comic see the cartoon, search the internet for images find the ultimate toys and make a nice upgrade to the suit, as max already say we should have a vote on this it looks like they buy the mask that use gustav graves or whatever in the bond movie die another day i don’t know what was the trouble to take a hood and put it on that is the original image of cobra commander the cristal face helmet is a classic more sophisticated look, i really don’t know if they find funny or amusement in destroy the images of something classic.

Apparently the filmmakers decided against the hood, arguing that the look was too reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan.

Never mind that the character’s been sporting the hooded look for some twenty-plus years now.

To be fair, the 80′s cartoon is what most of us remember, and the animated Cobra Commander stuck to the helmet for the most part (probably to avoid conjuring images of the KKK in a kids’ cartoon).

I’m guessing the iconic, shiny blue and silver helmet just seemed a little too silly for a live-action Joe movie.

(This, in a movie where the Joe team members wear Accelerator suits that make them look like they belong in the next Starship Troopers direct-to-DVD sequel…)

    I digress.

Either way, I too am disappointed with the look of the live-action Cobra Commander. I was really hoping they’d go with the hood, perhaps the all-black version shown in my earlier post here.

Perhaps, the filmmakers should have taken a cue from the Batman film franchise: Tim Burton and company wisely chose an all-black costume rather than the character’s traditional blue and gray suit when adapting the character for the 1989 Batman film.

The all-black look, better suited for a live-action, big screen treatment of the popular DC Comics character, has been retained for every other Batman film since, up to and including last year’s critical and commercial success, The Dark Knight.

Snake Eyes looks fantastic; the Baroness is dressed in her usual skin-tight, shiny black leather catsuit; and judging from the toy packaging shown in my previous post on the subject, even Destro will at some point sport his shiny metal face mask.

An all-black, hooded Cobra Commander would’ve worked just fine, I think.
