Really Great Super Mario Bros. Related Artwork

March 19th, 2008

Stumbled across these fun Super Mario Bros. related images online and decided to share them with you:

(Click on the pics to see them full-sized.)

Very cool.

I love the Ninji, Mario, Princess, the Goomba, Wart, and the little black and orange bird thing from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island.  The way Toad’s depicted kind of reminds me of the old Super Mario Bros. Super Show cartoon…

It’s titled “Pipe Dreams” by Dan Schoening.

Next up, an uncredited Super Mario Bros. 2 themed pic that I find utterly hilarious…

Poor Wart

And finally, Keith Webb’s promotional art for the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console:

There’s tons of cool stuff here.  I love the lil’ dudes from PuyoPuyo, the ultra-cute Metroids (!), the Goomba floating around in one of the Bubble Bobble bubbles, King Hippo, Raccoon Pac-Man, Birdo and his/her giant egg, the Moogle, Dr. Wily, and the uber-cute kiwi bird from that one old school NES game… you know, the one with the kiwi birds…

The Incredible Hulk Trailer

March 16th, 2008

Well, the wait’s finally over.  There’s a trailer for this summer’s The Incredible Hulk directed by Louis Leterrier and starring Ed Norton as Bruce Banner, the Hulk’s alter-ego.

Here it is:

Not so sure about this one…

The Forbidden Kingdom Starring Jackie Chan And Jet Li (Plus A Mini-Review Of Rush Hour 3)

March 13th, 2008

 The Forbidden Kingdom

You know, I actually like this poster.   (Although, Jackie’s hair does look a trifle odd…)

I’m still not sure about this one.

After watching the final trailer for this movie, I have a strong feeling this movie’s going to be really and truly awful.  (You can read my earlier post and watch the trailer here.)

Still, I’m probably going to end up seeing it in theaters, if only because it’s the first time these two martial arts superstars have appeared in a film together.  Also, there haven’t been a lot of martial arts films coming out recently, and I love me my martial arts films.

Here’s hoping the fight sequences (with choreography by Yuen Woo-Ping) make up for any other failings the movie may have.

(On a related side note, I just watched Rush Hour 3 with a friend the other day.  The trailer for that movie was actually pretty funny, and I was hoping it might actually be a bit funnier than the previous two films in the series.  Unfortunately, and predictably (when, oh, when will I ever learn?), the funny bits in the trailer were also the best bits, the story and dialogue was generally on par with its predecessors, i.e., terrible, and what’s worse, the action sequences were actually a noticeable step down from the mostly mediocre action sequences I’ve come to expect from the Rush Hour franchise.

I know Jackie Chan’s getting a bit too old to be doing all of his own stunts, but man, was I surprised, first of all, by the sheer number of times an obvious stand-in was used, but also by the amount of really badly disguised effects used to create some of the more ridiculous, hard-to-swallow stunts in the film.

I give it a 2 – avoid it, if you can.)

Wall-E

March 12th, 2008

Click here for a link to the latest Wall-E trailer!

Wall-E  (Awww….)

The movie looks like it’ll be a lot of fun.  I especially like the bit in the trailer where the cute little robot (Moe?) gets stuck between the doors, and the two robots introduce themselves.

I’m definitely going to see this one opening day.

See you June 27th!

A Really, Really Brief History Of Donkey Kong Short

March 12th, 2008

A week ago I posted a Super Mario Bros. short by Gabe Swarr (you can check it out here), one of the artists who contributed to I Am 8-Bit, a really cool book featuring original works of art in various media all inspired by retro video games – Donkey Kong, Frogger, Pac-Man, and the like.

Here are a few examples of Gabe Swarr’s Nintendo-related work:

Mario

Mario Block (This one, dubbed “Mario Block,” can be found in I Am 8-Bit.)

Marios

If you grew up in the 80s like I did and have a fondness for old-school video games like the ones mentioned above, all from the 8-bit arcade/NES-era of gaming, you should definitely check out the book – there’s a lot of great stuff in there.

If you enjoyed the previous clip, here’s another one directed by Gabe Swarr, this time presenting the history of Donkey Kong in just slightly over a minute:

The short was produced as an extra for the DVD release of The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters, a 2007 documentary about the somewhat intense rivalry between the world’s two highest scoring Donkey Kong players.

Great stuff.

I haven’t got around to watching King Of Kong yet, but I intend to someday soon.  I’ll post a review once I do.
